How Our Program Works

Following entry-level student testing, students are assigned to a tutor by the Center Director. Each student will receive two clinical hour lessons weekly.  All tutoring follows lesson plans designed to meet the individual needs of the child.

B.E.A.R. Reading Center follows the Orton-Gillingham approach, an established, proven, effective, multisensory intervention for dyslexia.

The Orton-Gillingham Instructional Approach is:

1. Neurological: based on how the brain works and learns by creating new neurological pathways

2. Diagnostic and prescriptive: developmental needs of the student are considered when planning a lesson. Each lesson serves as a diagnostic tool for the next lesson.

3. Multisensory:  engages Visual - Auditory - Kinesthetic – Tactile pathways

4. Structured and sequential: Material is presented in a specific order, beginning with the most common and consistent concepts.  This helps the student develop knowledge that can be applied independently and linked to new material.

5. Synthetic and analytic:  students learn both blending and segmenting skills which include both reading and spelling.

6. Cumulative: lessons go from simple to complex and are based on previous learning

7. Cognitive: teaches the history of language and the rules and generalizations that govern it

8. Flexible: because no child is exactly alike, lessons vary with each child

9. Taught toward mastery and automaticity: continual review of previously learned material taught toward automaticity.

10. Emotionally sound: Lessons are success oriented. Students gain confidence as well as skills. Learning becomes a rewarding experience.

The curriculum sequentially develops phonology, morphology, vocabulary, and comprehension which enhances the student’s abilities and increases their confidence to independently read, write, and spell.
